Born in Panama City and raised in NYC, Daphne Rubin-Vega has been performing on stage and screen for more than twenty years. As she takes to the stage again in Aaron Mark’s Empanada Loca, we thought we’d take a look back at some of the highlights of her brilliant and varied career.

1988: Daphne begins her musical career as the lead singer of the Latin freestyle group Pajama Party. Over the next two years several songs will climb to Billboard’s Hot 100 List.

1992: Daphne becomes a member of Labyrinth Theater Company.

Daphne in Rent1996: Daphne originates the role of Mimi Marquez in Jonathan Larson’s RENT at NYTW. The musical later moves to Broadway and wins the Pulitzer Prize. Daphne earns her first Tony nomination (Best Actress in a Musical).

1998: As Gloria Perez in Wild Things (co-starring Kevin Bacon and Matt Dillon), Daphne wins the Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actress.

1999: Daphne plays Tia in Flawless opposite Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

2000: The Rocky Horror Show returns to Broadway with Daphne as Magenta alongside Lea DeLaria, Tom Hewitt and Raul Esparza.

AnnaTropics2001: Souvenirs, Daphne’s first album of original music, is recorded at Mercury Records.

2003: Daphne originates the role of Conchita (opposite Jimmy Smits) in Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics, which goes on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Daphne earns her second Tony nomination (Best Featured Actress in a Play).

2006: Daphne returns to Broadway as Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables.

2006: Redemption Songs, Daphne’s second album of original music, is released by Sh-k-Boom.

2007: Daphne returns to Labyrinth to play Lucy in Bob Glaudini’s Jack Goes Boating.

2010: The film version of Jack Goes Boating premiers with Daphne reprising her role of Lucy and earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film marked Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut.

Daphne Streetcar2012: Daphne returns to Broadway playing Stella DuBois in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Emily Mann, and starring Blair Underwood and Nicole Ari Parker.

2013: Daphne guest stars as Agnes in eight episodes of the Broadway-themed Smash on NBC.

2015: Aaron Mark’s Empanada Loca makes its world premier at Labyrinth Theater with Daphne as Dolores.
