In
LAByrinth’s electrifying and unique annual benefit, four celebrity
teams battle for victory in a hilarious speed-charades
competition. In 2004, LAB’s Fight Club took place on a junkyard
cityscape; 2005’s Old School pep rally included cheerleaders and a
marching band; The Gloves Are Off! in 2006 was a knockout in a boxing
ring; The Battle of Good and Evil drew crowds in 2007; and in 2008 the
players cranked it up all the way at We Will Rock You! On
December 7, 2009, your favorite celebrities bluffed and busted in a
fearsome no-limit tournament sponsored by Entertainment Weekly and Duracell Power Lab.
The 2009 Dave Hoghe Award (of which past recipients include Madonna, Daryl Roth and Carole Shorenstein Hays) was presented to Time Warner Inc. in honor of its inspiring commitment to new work and its leadership support of LAByrinth Theater Company. The live auction hosted by John Patrick Shanley,
which raised $68,500 towards LAByrinth’s 18th Season, featured
exclusive and money-can’t-buy experiences like an entire VIP box of 16
tickets to a Yankees game, a dinner reservation at Rao’s in Harlem,
tickets to six Broadway shows and the 2010 Tony Awards, a Smart car –
and a chance to play Charades with the celebrities that night!
Charades players
Ian Astbury, Bob Balaban, Bobby Cannavale, Tom Colicchio, Billy Crudup,
Shannon Elizabeth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Krasinski, Padma
Lakshmi, Jesse L. Martin, Christopher Meloni, John Ortiz, Julia
Roberts, Sam Rockwell, Cynthia Rowley, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Julia Stiles,
Yul Vázquez, Kristen Wiig and David Zayas were kept in line by referee Eric Bogosian.
After three intense rounds, the team known as the Flappers – comprising
Balaban, Lakshmi, Rowley, Stiles and Wiig (which adopted Roberts in the
final round) – took home the Duracell Championship Belt!
The 400-strong crowd enjoyed Sterling Vintner’s Collection Sauvignon Blanc and Echelon Pinot Noir from Diageo, Mike’s Hard Lemonade and specialty cocktails the Blind Tiger, the Cat’s Pajamas and the Blackjack from Boru Vodka, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, Hendrick’s Gin and Izze Soda – as well as catering from RCano Events. The extraordinary St. Paul’s Hall was the perfect venue, while the private afterparty at the Hudson Bar featured music by DJ Aaron LaCrate.

In a series of tongue-in-cheek webisodes,
LAByrinth captured on camera the dirty deeds of celebrities as they
searched for the underground Charades location. Witness the
crimes, the lies and the desperation at LABtheater.org/webisodes_2009.html
LAByrinth
was founded in 1992 by 13 actors who wanted to create new plays that

today is an inclusive ensemble of 115 established and emerging artists
from a wide array of cultural perspectives, committed to the creation
of compelling original theater that celebrates the diversity of its
home city. In the last 18 years, the Company has developed
hundreds of original theater pieces, and has premiered 53 new American
plays here in New York. 2009/10 marks LAByrinth’s 18th Season –
led by new Artistic Directors Mimi O’Donnell, Stephen Adly Guirgis and
Yul Vázquez.
